| Purpose. To assess whether sclerectomy and/or trabeculectomy can increase aqueous outflow in isolated perfused porcine eyes.
Methods. Under a scleral flap (5 x 5 x 0.3 mm), eventually watertight sealed with acrylic glue, surgery consisted either of penetrating trabeculectomy (1x1 mm), paralimbal (1 mm) radial sclerectomy (1x2x0.5 mm), combined trabeculectomy and paralimbal radial sclerectomy (1x3x0.5 mm), or neither trabeculectomy nor sclerectomy. Some eyes underwent sham surgery (without scleral flap). Aqueous outflow facility was calculated by measuring intraocular pressure at different perfusion rates (2.5-7.5 µl/min).
Results. Aqueous outflow facility, in comparison to sham surgery (0.28±0.06 µl/min/mmHg), was only significantly (P < 0.05; n = 6-7) increased after paralimbal sclerectomy alone (0.51±0.08 µl/min/mmHg) or combined with trabeculectomy (0.50±0.06 µl/min/mmHg).
Conclusion. In isolated pig eyes, paralimbal sclerectomy but not trabeculectomy (under a watertight sealed scleral flap) increases aqueous outflow.
